Some frivolous facts about your garden

12/7/2018

Did you know:
  • Butterflies can taste through their feet but they can’t chew. They use this unique talent to find leaves where they can lay eggs to give their caterpillars the best start.
  • Stinging nettles are a valuable addition to your garden since they support butterflies and other insects. This food source will encourage birds and other wild creatures.
  • A mature tree can be thirsty, gulping down up to 230 litres of water every day. No wonder big trees can undermine houses when the suck the ground dry.
  • The rose family contains some of the most popular fruits in the garden, including apples and pears, apricots and cherries, almonds, raspberries and strawberries, amongst others.
  • Whilst a sunflower looks like it has one large flower, it actually is made up of lots of tiny flowers, which become seeds.
  • Oak trees have to mature for about 50 years before they start to grow acorns.
  • When rain approaches, bees may disappear from the garden. They return to the hive when humidity increases.
  • A species of grass known as seagrass has been growing on earth for up to 200,000 years, scientists think.
  • Grass regrows so efficiently because it has evolved to grow from the base rather than the top, so it benefits from being grazed or cut.
